Job Overview

The Junior Mechanical Fitter provides hands-on support to the mechanical maintenance team, carrying out isolation, removal, refurbishment and installation of valves, pipework, panels and instruments on plant and process equipment.

Reporting to the Site Supervisor / Maintenance Foreman, the successful candidate will carry out mechanical fitting, rigging and pressure-testing tasks under supervision, working safely within isolation and permit systems while developing the practical skills required to progress within the mechanical discipline.

Responsibilities

Isolation and Safety Preparation

  • Verify lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Ensure pipelines are drained and gas-free.
  • Follow confined space entry procedures.
  • Check for flammable vapours.

Mechanical Work

  • Assess, clean and test old equipment.
  • Remove old valves, panels and instruments.
  • Disconnect flanges, bolts and gaskets.
  • Handle heavy valves using lifting equipment.
  • Clean and degrease valves.
  • Replace seals, seats and packing.
  • Replace gaskets and studs.
  • Recoat or repaint equipment with anti-corrosion coatings.
  • Carry out waterproofing.
  • Install new valves, pipe supports, ladders and instruments.
  • Align pipework and valves correctly.
  • Torque flange bolts to correct specifications.
  • Ensure proper gasket seating.
  • Perform welding as required.
  • Perform rigging as required.
  • Procure materials, tools and equipment required for the work.

Safety Considerations 

  • Comply with OHS Act of 1993 requirements.
  • Comply with applicable Jig standards.

Pressure Testing and Commissioning

  • Perform hydrostatic pressure tests.
  • Check for fuel leaks.
  • Confirm valves open/close properly.
  • Assist during system commissioning.
  • Prepare project progress reports.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • N2–N3 Mechanical Engineering.
  • Trade Test Certificate (Fitter / Fitting & Turning – Red Seal).
  • Driver's License.
  • Previous experience working in the petrochemical industry will be an added advantage.
